We have one Postdoctoral position open now (August 2025)!
Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Epidemiology and Genomics
We are seeking an exceptional postdoctoral researcher to join our interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of infectious disease epidemiology and environmental science. This position focuses on developing molecular and genomic tools and computational modeling to understand viral transmission, evolution, and ecology through wastewater surveillance data. Funding is available to support this position for 3+ years.
About the Lab: The lab is young and enthusiastic about innovative and quality research. We believe interdisciplinarity is the future. The PI, Dr. Fuqing Wu, has experience in virology, microbiology, synthetic biology, mathematical modeling, microbiome, environmental surveillance, and genomic sequencing. The lab is currently focused on wastewater surveillance and microbiome projects, but we support you to explore your ideas with available laboratory resources. The PI is highly supportive of proposal writing, career development, and mentorship to help you achieve your professional goals. See Lab web page for more details: https://www.wufqlab.org/. The candidate will benefit from exceptional opportunities to collaborate with leading researchers across UTHealth, the world's largest medical center (Texas Medical Center), and top-tier universities nationwide.
Minimum Qualifications:
· PhD in Environmental Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Quantitative Biology, Computational Biology, or related field
· Strong research track record
Preferred Qualifications:
· Extensive wet lab experience in molecular biology and microbiology techniques
· Experience with complete NGS workflows from library preparation through bioinformatics analysis, including viral genomics, amplicon sequencing, and metagenomics
· Experience with wastewater-based epidemiology or environmental virology
· Experience in mathematical modeling
To Apply: This position is available immediately (August 27, 2025) and will remain open until filled . Applicants should send an email with CV and a description of your qualifications and research interests to Dr. Fuqing Wu at fuqing.wu@uth.tmc.edu.
Opportunities
The Wu lab is looking for exceptional researchers with interest or expertise in infectious diseases, microbiome, bioinformatics, molecular epidemiology, virology, biostatistics, synthetic biology, environmental science, or related fields*. Having microbiology or bioinformatic experience working on next-generation data analysis is a plus. We value skills and creativity, and strive to build a diverse team for innovative and quality research. Interested individuals should reach out to the PI at fuqing.wu@uth.tmc.edu.
Graduate Students
We accept students from all the graduate programs at UTHealth, and welcome interested students in the Texas Medical Center area. Ph.D students and Master students who desire to conduct research are especially welcome.
Postdoctoral Scholars
We are always looking for talented postdoctoral scholars interested in our research topics. Inquiries should be sent to the PI with your CV and a description of research interests. The PI is very supportive for prospective postdocs to apply fellowships, and postdocs with approved fellowships are very welcome.
